Camera flashes

There are essentially 3 main types of camera flash if you look at their effects. These effects can be created using multiple different types of technology but there are still basically 3 kinds of flash.

Flash type Visibility Photo effects Applications Technologies
Black flash Black light Not visible to humans or animals Photos will appear greyscale (black and white) Used where you especially want to avoid detection of the camera by humans (eg. risk of theft, damage). Black-light LEDs; "no glo" bulb used by Reconyx
Red flash Red light Dull red glow visible to humans and animals Photos will appear greyscale (black and white) Used where you want to avoid bright white flashes. An unobtrusive flash for wildlife research where risk of human theft or tampering of the camera is low. Red-light LEDs
White flash White light Bright white flash of light, conspicuously visible to humans and animals Photos will appear in colour Used where colour photographs are essential for night-time monitoring and where bright white flashes of light are acceptable to animal subjects and where the risk of human theft or tampering of the camera is low or acceptable. White-light LEDs; incandescent bulb.
